Group Supervision

What it is and How to Gain the Most Benefit

Group Counselling Supervision is a space – either in person, or online – where professional counsellors can meet in a group setting to share experiences, dilemmas, and challenges. The counsellors participating gain support, guidance and advice from both a clinical supervisor, and from their peers.

Benefits

Collegial Connection

Counselling can be a very lonely professional experience. We are often spending hours, day and weeks working in isolation. Group Supervision creates a space to share with others with similar experiences, who have similar philosophies and goals within the work we do. It creates connection and understanding. It validates our work with clients, and our unique professional journeys.

Diverse Viewpoints

As individuals, every counsellor in a group supervision group will have a different cultural, academic, professional and personal background that they bring to the group. This is of benefit to all participating. It creates a fruitful and diverse experience that isn’t possible in individual supervision.

Affordable

Group Counselling gets you more bang for your buck than individual supervision. It is financially beneficial way to extend your supervision budget.

Learning from Others

In group supervision we hear the wisdom of others in their challenges, what ‘worked’ and what didn’t. We learn from the experiences of others with more and different experiences to us. If and when we meet a similar challenge we have knowledge to draw on.

Develop Our Self-Reflective Practice

As we are hearing the experiences of others, we have space to notice our own reactions: the internal agreements, judgements and biases we may have. We can use these moments to develop our self-awareness. Group Supervision is collaborative interpersonal work.

Professional Development

Group Supervision increases our exposure to different ways of working, giving us new ideas on how to work with our clients. It also introduces us to new modalities, and professional training opportunities.

Respectful of Our Unique Sharing Style

Unlike individual supervision, in group supervision we can sit back and listen and learn from the experiences of others. If we do not have the capacity to share our experiences, or we are not currently experiencing any tricky dynamics in our work, we can participate quietly. For those who take time to warm up and feel comfortable in sharing, group supervision allows that time and space for safety to become possible.
